Quality Standards in the Construction: An Assessment of Crush

Crush or Coarser Aggregate is one of the most important components for Construction purposes, mostly used in concrete or in the base or sub-base of roads. The usage of crush is based upon its grading, which means the size of grain present in the crush.

The size of a grain of crush used in concrete is usually 3/4 of an inch. The boulder used in sub-base in order to build roads is comparatively larger in size (approx. 2 inches). However, the size of the crush used in asphalt is 3/8 inches.

SOURCES:

The main sources of Crush in Pakistan are:

1. Margalla

2. Sargodha

3. DG Khan

MARGALLA CRUSH:

Margalla Crush is obtained from Margalla Hills. Its major identity is the white color of its stone. It is considered the best in quality, and its compressive strength is much more as compared to others.

SARGODHA CRUSH:

Second, comes the Sargodha’s Crush as per quality standard which is extracted from the nearby hills of Sargodha, It is identified by the black color of its stone.

DG KHAN CRUSH:

There are several other reservoirs of crush in Pakistan; one of them is the crush from DG Khan which is known by the name of Sakhi Sarwar. It is usually identified by the extreme red color of its stone.

Factors affecting the Buying rate of Crush:

1. Sizing:

Before buying any kind of crush, the first major thing you should be aware of its size. Sizing depends upon the use of crush. The size of the crush used in homes concrete should not be more than 1/2 inch. Neither should be any round pebbles in a crush nor any small-sized gravel. That small-sized gravel will make effects on the strength of concrete. Usually there are testing techniques available in laboratories but if you are buying crush by yourself then you can personally visualize the quality of a crush.

2. Amount of Red particles:

The second factor which should be taken care of is the amount of reddish grains; they should be less in amount but 2-4 % quantity can be tolerated. The thumb rule to check the amount of red grains presence is to glance through the crush quickly. If you find difficult to find the reddish stones on the surface, then it will be a good quality crush and if you find them easily then it will not be a good quality crush.

3. Amount of Flaky or Elongated particles:

The third factor which is taken care of while buying a crush is the absence of elongated round stones because the presence of these round pebbles compromises the strength and bonding of a crush. Likewise thin, small or large flaky and elongated chips could also affect its strength.

4. Amount of Dust:

One of the identities of a pure crush is that the amount of dust in it will be very low. One can check it by pouring the crush in a bowl or a glass and then quality is judged by viewing the dust being dissolved.

How to Measure Crush:

Whenever the crush is brought at a site, the thumb rule to measure it is to calculate its cubic feet. For this, one has to measure the length and width of the dumper on which the crush is brought, and then one has to measure its height and depth with the help of structural iron (سَریا). In order to calculate the depth of a dumper or the height of a crush while measuring crush’s dumper, the usage of structural iron will be an essential thing.

It should be kept in mind that the structural iron will be kept straight and solid so that it should be inserted straight so that you could check the exact measurement of height. If you didn’t set the aforementioned alignment then you will bear the financial loss.

Measurement of a crush can be calculated as:

Total Quantity = Length (ft.) x Width (ft.) x Depth (ft.)

Suppose,

                        Length = 14’6” (14 feet & 6 inches)

                        Width = 6’3”     (6 feet & 3 inches)

                        Depth = 8’10” (8 feet & 10 inches)

Feet figures will remain the same, convert figures of inches:

                       6” = 6/12 = .5

                        3” = 3/12 = .25

                        10”=10/12=.83

Hence,

                        Length = 14.5

                        Width = 6.25

                        Depth = 8.83

Total Quantity = 14.5 x 6.25 x 8.83 = 800 ft3

Usually 1000-1100 ft3 crush is loaded on a large dumper whereas 700-750 ft3 crush can be loaded on small trucks and 300-350 ft3 crush can be loaded on trollies respectively.
