Sand is considered to be an important element in the construction. It is also considered as a main bonding element in the construction due to its moisture containing properties. For construction, sand is regularly utilized as an element for concrete, with various alternatives accessible that relying upon what a task needs.
Types of Sand:
There are usually two types of sand available in Pakistan
Fine Sand:
Fine Sand contains very small tiny particles ranging from 0.075mm to 0.425mm in size.
Medium Sand:
Fine Sand contains medium-size particles that are relatively higher than Fine Sand but lower as compared to Coarse Sand. The size of the particles is ranging from 0.425mm to 2mm.
Coarse Sand:
It contains relatively huge particles as compared to Fine Sand & Medium Sand ranging from 2.0mm to 4.75mm in size.
Reservoirs of Sand:
There are many reservoirs of Sand in Pakistan but the main reservoir of sand exists in the province of Punjab, most prominently located in Ravi and Chenab. Both Ravi and Chenab acquires fine Sand but Ravi Sand is very poor in quality as compared to Chenab Sand. The clay content in Chenab Sand is much lower than Ravi Sand, that’s why it is considered to be the best sand as compared to Ravi Sand.
Primary Usage:
Fine Sand is usually used while plastering, so people can utilize both Ravi and Chenab Sand. People can go either with the Ravi Sand or Chenab Sand. But if you are interested in concrete, then go with the likes of Coarse Sand for sure.
People can easily find Coarse Sand either from Chenab or Lawrencepur. It is easily accessible from both Chenab and Lawrencepur. Lawrencepur sand is usually considered excellent sand for concrete in the construction.
Quality Check of Sand:
The quality of sand depends on the content of clay present in it. If the amount of clay in the sand is higher, that sand will be declared as low-quality sand. Similarly, if the amount of clay in the sand is low, then that sand will be declared as high-quality sand.
Pour a small amount of sand in a funnel or beaker, mix some water into it, shake it well, and then leave the funnel for some time. Sand will settle down after some time, if clay present in the funnel then you will find a small layer of clay pasted on the sand.
Quantity Check:
Sand is usually carried out in dumpers or trolleys. In construction perspectives, the quantity of sand is measured in cubic feet also termed as “sankra”. It is a very intricate process to measure the quantity of sand if it is being carried out in trolleys. The quantity of sand carried out in a trolley comprises a range of minimum 250 cubic feet (2.5 sankra) and maximum of 400 cubic feet (4 sankra). On account of dumpers, the sand count is exceptionally simple and it should be done to remain safe from illicit sellers based on counterfeit amount. The measurement is very basic so take the internal estimation of dumper’s stockpiling zone, also measure length, width, and profundity with the assistance of steel rod. Depth ought to be estimated cautiously up to the degree at which sand is available.
Let’s calculate the amount of sand in numbers:
Total Quantity of Sand= Length (ft.) * Width (ft.) * Depth (ft.)
Suppose
Length= 14’ 8’’ (14 Feet and 8 Inches)
Width= 6’3’’ (6 Feet and 3 Inches)
Depth= 8’ 9’’ (8 Feet and 9 Inches)
Convert Figures: Convert Inches to Feet
8’’= 8/12= 0.67
3’’= 3/12= 0.25
9’’= 9/12= 0.75
Length= 14 + 0.67=14.67 Feet
Width= 6 + 0.25= 6.25 Feet
Depth= 8 + 0.75= 8.75 Feet
Total Quality of Sand= 14.67*6.25*8.75= 802 Cubic Feet
