The strength of a building depends on the attributes of a constructor as well as the Quality of a material used in the Construction. Apart from all the material used in the Construction of a house, Brick is the major element in the Construction. A high quality and durable brick is the depiction of a well-built house because it has to bear the heavy load of the whole structure.
Things you need to know while Buying Bricks:
- Firstly check the size of a brick while purchasing for the Construction. The size of a top level brick is 9*3*4.5 inches and it will be rectangular in shape. If you didn’t find the aforesaid dimensions, then you will have to use more cement mortar and you will find difficulty in finishing.
- As you all know that bricks are made in a kiln so it is possible that some bricks came out to be a well-burnt brick while the rest be an un-burnt brick. Well-burnt brick is strength-wise the best one but sometimes it causes a change in its actual sizing. However, it may be a source of hindrance during plasterwork.
- Un-burnt brick is very soft hence it doesn’t bear any load during masonry
- Apart from the sizing of Brick, you can also check the quality of Brick via its color. The color quantity of the bricks should be same either it is Dark Red or Copper.
- The strength of Brick could be checked via collision. When two high-quality bricks collide at the same time, it creates a metallic noise. In this way, you can check the durability of brick.
- You can also check the quality of bricks via dropping them from a certain height. Drop a brick from 1-1.5 m height and if it remains in the constant form then it will be considered a high-quality brick. At the same time, drop a brick from the same height, if it gets damaged then it will be a low-quality brick.
- High-Quality bricks absorb 10-15% water by weight after getting dipped for an hour. Let the brick to remain in water up to 24 hours, then let it be dry; If there are no white spots on the brick than consider it to be a High-Quality brick. On the other hand, if there are white spots present on the brick then consider it a low-quality brick. If you use that low-quality brick, then plaster and paint would be damaged rapidly.
- The compressive strength of a high-quality brick ranges from 900-1500psi. If you didn’t choose brick from that range, then the wall of your house would be considered to be an unreliable one.
- Laboratory test is mandatory in order to analyze the compressive strength.
- It is not necessary that the bricks trolley you are going to purchase is of good quality. It all depends on the quality of the bricks while purchasing.
- If you are going to purchase high-quality bricks then there would be 1-2% soft bricks, while the rest would be well-burnt bricks.
- If you are going to purchase 2nd and 3rd level bricks then you will find a huge amount of non-durable bricks.
Important points to observe while supervising Brick Masonry

Brick masonry is exceptionally a solid form of Construction. It is usually composed by setting bricks in a mortar in a precise manner in order to build a strong structure. The major functionality of brick masonry structure is that it can be used as a load-bearing or non-load bearing walls.
- There are some low-burnt bricks and the rest are high-burnt bricks whenever the bricks are purchased. During masonry, it would be a suitable approach to sort out the bricks and utilize the high-quality bricks so that you could build a commendable wall.
- The bricks are ought to be soaked in the water before masonry for adequate time with the goal that the water enters the entire vicinity of the brick.
- The preparation of mortar is a mandatory element during masonry. During brick masonry 1/4 size of mortar has been used.

- During masonry, one thing should be kept in mind that the frog facing upward.
- During masonry, it is very important to apply mortar on both sides of the brick.
- It should be taken care of that the width of mortar is not more than ½ inch
- It is very important to check the plumb after every attempt so that the wall will be kept straight during masonry.
- While constructing the wall of 4.5 inches, it should be kept in mind that the 4.5 inches wall should not be lifted more than 4 foot at the same time. Similarly, if you have to construct a 9 inches wall then it should not be lifted more than 7 foot at a time.
- Lastly, the masonry wall should be cleaned with a brush so that the additional mortar will be removed properly.
- The prepared masonry wall should be watered for at least three days so that it could gain maximum strength.
